I am a big believer in the benefits of Personal Training in improving and developing fitness and life quality levels of those of all ages, especially the over 50’s. But it has to be the right kind of training, with the trainer taking into account the history, capabilities and aspirations of the client. This is even more the case with those over 50, who may not have a recent record of fitness or may need exceptional levels of attention from the Trainer in order to remain motivated, to stick to the recommendations and therefore make progress over time.
But I’m not able to be everywhere at all times, so I have created a list of Personal Trainers country-wide that have been approved by me on behalf of Fitness Over Fifty Ltd., and I trust each of these Trainers to deliver the same quality of training and professional service that I strive to provide.
As a very minimum, each Personal Trainer has the REPS Level 3 qualification (or equivalent), full insurance, and a successful track record of clients – including those aged over 50.
More than this, every individual here has shown me they have the care and consideration to ‘go the extra mile’ to achieve client success, taking whatever extra effort is needed to ensure that their clients have positive, useful and enjoyable sessions with their trainer which enables the trainer to help the clients progress towards their goals.

At the age of 57 (2017) I decided to turn my hobby into a late change of career and am now a qualified L3 Personal Trainer. I have always been into fitness but as we age it is not easy to continue and we need more motivation. I concentrate on the over 50s because I can relate to similar problems of this age group. My husband and I jointly own a gym in Melbourne, Derbyshire that caters for the needs of all the community nearby. Probably the fittest client here is 62, although we may up that one day! I have a large client base, and some of the not-so-young ones often add some of my classes to the Personal Training – the Zumba class being a favourite around here!

Jonathon Smith – Aberdeen

Back in 2005, I was a 39 year old smoker. I had been fit when I was younger but let my fitness slide for 15 years. I quit smoking and entered the London Triathlon. Fitness is now a major part of my life, going from a hobby to a career. I believe anyone can work towards a healthier lifestyle, regardless of age or ability. I love helping men and women in their 50s and 60s – like me – get into great shape.
On my 53rd birthday, I weighed in at 19 stone 4lbs. Overweight, and bordering on obese. Now, at 57, I am 13 stone 8lbs and own a ripped physique. I’m REPS Level 3 Qualified (with further qualifications in Advanced Nutrition for Weight Management and Physical Performance) I am focussing (but not to the exclusion of any others) on Over-50 clients, particularly obese or with on-set Type 2 diabetes.
